Makes use of both the new WATFIV and the WATFOR compilers. FORTRAN restrictions specific to WATFOR, and FORTRAN extensions specific to WATFIV, are pointed out as such throughout the text. Includes the important extension available in WATFIV (but not in WATFOR)--the existence of variables of type CHARACTER. These can be employed to produce printed messages (not just numbers) in teh sutdent's output without the need to learn FORMAT statements. Appendix B -- WATFOR/WATFIV Diagnostic Messages and Hints. In this appendix, the author gives the diagnostic message codes printed out by the WATFOR/WATFIV compilers; next to each message code is the actual diagnostic message. For those messages which are not self-explanatory, further explanations are given, as well as hints for possible action. This avoids the need for the instructor to supply supplementary materials to his students. Makes frequent reference to American Standard FORTRAN in the text as well as the glossary. Features of IBM G-level FORTRAN which are not available in American Standard FORTRAN are pointed ou as such. Consequently, a programmer who needs to stick closely to American Standard FORTRAN is able to do so, at the same time that the student using the WATFOR or WATFIV compilers can learn the full power of these versions of FORTRAN. The book is self-contained to a manual as well as a FORTRAN textbook. Emphasis is on the student working alone, using this book as his sole reference. Full emphasis is given to debugging programs. Techniques for program planning and debugging are given in great detail. Input deck structure and interpretation of printed outpit (including diagnostic messages) are discussed fully, early in the book. This allows the student rapid access to the computer. Includes answers to drill exercises in the appendix.
